Bluff Park resident Candy DeFazio retired from teaching and started looking for something fun to occupy her time. She joined the Long Beach Lawn Bowling Club in 2009 and fell in love with the sport. At first, she enjoyed social bowling but was soon bitten by the competitive bug. Since then, she has worked hard at the game and in 2015 was selected to join Team USA. In March of 2015, she traveled to Hong Kong and China where her team won the women’s first Gold Medal. In October, she and her pairs partner, Eileen Lancendorfer, also a Bluff Park resident, won the Gold Medal at the US Open. Candy took the Silver Medal in singles and received a plaque naming her Bowler of the Tournament. In November, Candy traveled to New Zealand to participate in the Asia Pacific Championships where her team won the silver medal, losing only to Australia.
Most recently, Candy qualified for the 2016 World Bowls Competition in New Zealand and the North American Challenge in Canada. We want to wish Candy and her team good luck in the competitions to follow.
