DESCRIPTION:Beach Streets University \n\n\n\n \nBeach Streets is an Open Streets event designed to showcase businesses & neighborhoods!  For a single day\, the City will close a major traffic corridor to cars and open the street to people walking & bicycling.  Streets closed to traffic are Atherton\, Bellflower Blvd.\, Los Coyotes Diagonal\, and Spring St. and are labeled in orange on the map.\n\n“NO PARKING” signs will be posted 72 hours in advance for your awareness. \nAcceptable modes of transportation along the route include bicycles\, skates\, roller-blades\, skateboards\, etc. \nThis is a great opportunity for you to explore local businesses and services.  Councilwoman Price will have a booth set up at the end of Beach Streets\, near Cal State Long Beach.  Please stop by as you make your way down the street! \n \nWe look forward to seeing you at Beach Streets University! \n\nBeach Streets info here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– By Lisa West\n3rd District\, Business Relations Liaison

SUMMARY:History of the Harbor in 74 Feet
DESCRIPTION:The amazing story of the development of the Port of Long Beach and its artistic depiction in a unique 74-foot tile mural will be presented at the Historical Society of Long Beach at 3:00 pm on Saturday\, April 29\, 2017\, at 4260 Atlantic Avenue. \nLong Beach Heritage and the Historical Society of Long Beach are co-sponsors of this program. \nGeorge & Carmela Cunningham\, journalists\, publishers\, and co-authors of Port Town: How the People of Long Beach Built\, Defended\, and Profited From Their Harbor will provide an overview of the port’s history. \nDr. Louise Ivers\, Professor Emeritus of Art at California State University Domiguez Hills and author of Long Beach\, A History Through Its Architecture\, will discuss the construction in 1959 of the tile mural hand-painted by Paul Marciel Souza using tiles manufactured by Gladding McBean\, the premier California terra cotta company founded in 1875. \nCheryl Perry\, President of Long Beach Heritage and President of the Long Beach Navy Memorial Heritage Association\, will address current efforts to protect this important cultural artifact from demolition and to relocate it instead. \nThe program will conclude with a reception and book-signing opportunity.
