SUMMARY:Historical Cemetery Tour
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \nwww.hslb.org \n  \n\n\n\nTaken from the Historical Society of Long Beach Website: http://hslb.org/historical-cemetery-tour/ \nThere is some parking inside the cemetery\, overflow parking is behind the cemetery at Willow Springs Park (enter from Orange Ave.)\, and there is also open street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. \nThe ground is uneven\, so we recommend comfortable shoes. Typically the morning is chilly while the afternoon is sunny and warm\, so a sweater or light coat is recommended. \n  \n\nA Little Background on the\nHistorical Cemetery Tour\nBeginning in 1995\, the HSLB has conducted an annual living history tour at the city’s two oldest cemeteries. Located on Willow Street between Orange and California and adjacent to one another\, Long Beach Municipal Cemetery and Sunnyside Cemetery are “home” to more than 20\,000 past residents of the area. \nThe tour takes place the Saturday on or before Halloween and features graveside presentations by professional and volunteer actors who relate the life and demise of the person lying in rest. Each year’s program features a number of stories – some are individuals who helped shape the city’s political past\, others are ordinary people whose tales remind us that rich or poor\, famed or nearly forgotten\, everyone has a story to tell. Period costumes worn by all the performers further heighten the experience with an aura of authenticity. Many guests get so involved in the presentation that questions like “What was it like to live here in 1920?” are often asked of the performers. \nThe tour is appropriate for families and all ages. There is nothing scary about the vignettes or the location. \nTickets are sold online and at the gate from 8:30 a.m. until noon just inside the main gateway on Willow Street or at the Orange Avenue entrance. The tour takes approximately two hours to complete\, and the last presentations are between 2:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. \nA big thank you to the Long Beach Playhouse and Artistic Director Denis McCourt for his assistance providing costume coordination for the Historical Cemetery Tour. Former Long Beach mayor Bob Foster\, above right\, has been a volunteer actor for several past tours. Among the stories he has told\, a favorite was Kid Mexico\, a.k.a. the Bingo Baron of Signal Hill. \n

SUMMARY:3rd Council District Residents' Meeting
DESCRIPTION:All residents of the Bluff Park Historic District are part of the 3rd City Council District and are encouraged to participate in this meeting for issues relevant to our neighborhood and adjoining neighborhoods.\n\nSaturday\, October 21\, 2017\, @ 10:00 AM at Fire Station 14\, located at 5200 E Eliot Street.\n\n\n\nThis month\, we have planned a special community meeting based on feedback from you and your neighbors! The new East Division Police Commander Erik Herzog will be leading a discussion on various topics related to crime.\n\n\n\nThis Community Meeting will answer such questions as:\n\nhow do I effectively report crime;\nwhat is the difference between a theft\, burglary\, and robbery;\nhow do I request contact from the Police Department after I report a crime;\nwhen is an arrest made; and\nwhat is the difference between a misdemeanor and a felony.\n\nAttendees will learn about the arrest and booking process. The meeting will take you from the time an arrest occurs to when the individual appears in front of a judge. We will also discuss the common issues that law enforcement agencies run into in California during that process. \nCrime is a growing concern in our District\, City\, and Country. This Community Meeting will shed light on the intricacies of the criminal justice process and how we as residents can proactively contribute. \n\n\n\nIn addition to this wonderful program from the Long Beach Police Department\, you will receive a regular update from your Third District Council Office on many of the exciting projects going on in the Third District.\n\n\n\nHope to see everyone there!\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n– By Nina Moussavi\n\n\n\n3rd District\, District Office Director\nwww.suzieaprice.com

SUMMARY:Land Use Element: Public Forum Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Are you concerned about increased density and growth potential in Long Beach?\nMake sure to attend an upcoming public discussion forum!\n\n\n\nBPNA would like to help spread the word about Long Beach’s Land Use Element of the General Plan\, and its future impact on the density and growth of the city.\n\nCity staff recently completed the Land Use Element (LUE) of the General Plan and brought it to the Planning Commission.\n\nSome citizens voiced their concerns about the increased density allowed on major thoroughfares and other areas in Long Beach detailed in the LUE.\n\nThe Commission voted to allow more public discussion of the matter before any action is taken.\n\nFour meetings are scheduled in various venues around the city between now and October 18. The public is invited to attend and participate in them. \n\nDates and locations are as follows:\n\n\n1. Saturday\, Sept 30\, 3-5 p.m. at Veterans Park Community Center\, 101 E. 28th St.\n\n\n2. Weds\, October 4\, 6-8 p.m. at Whaley Park Community Center\, 5620 Atherton St.\n\n3. Saturday\, October 14\, 11am-1 pm at Best Western Golden Sails Hotel\, 6285 E. PCH\n\n4. Wednesday\, October 18\, 6-8 p.m. at Scherer Park\, 4891 Atlantic Ave. Outdoor tent area adjacent to the Long Beach Police North Division\n\n\nNote: Change of Location for October 18 Public Forum Meeting\nThe meeting location for the fourth event has been relocated from the Expo Center due to roofing construction; and as the City expects more attendees than the facility can accommodate\, based on previous General Plan meeting attendance.  The event will now be held in an outdoor tent area at Scherer Park\, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm\, adjacent to the Long Beach Police North Division\, 4891 Atlantic Ave.\, to better accommodate the several hundred expected attendees and help ensure parking availability. \nThe meetings will feature a town hall presentation\, a question and answer component\, and an open house format to provide several opportunities for engagement.  This format will enable a diversity of voices to participate and offer input on this important planning project. \nFor more information about the General Plan update and next steps\, to view the Land Use and Urban Design Element drafts\, or to take a short survey\, visit: www.longbeach.gov/lueude2040. \nAbout Long Beach Development Services \nThe mission of Long Beach Development Services is to make a difference in our community by building a dynamic\, safe\, and sustainable City that honors its past and embraces the future.  Visit us at www.lbds.info\, “Like” us on Facebook\, follow us on Twitter\, or subscribe to our YouTube channel. \nMore information on the city’s Land Use Element Proposal:\nhttp://www.longbeach.gov/common/templates/city-news.aspx?id=71777
