When Hurricane Katrina hit I decided that since my time was now my own I looked into ways I could help. One night I was attending a volunteer orientation with the Red Cross. The following day I was on a plane to Louisiana. After three weeks of helping to change peoples lives and seeing them smile again \,  I was hooked. Since that time almost twenty years ago I’ve become more involved with Disaster preparedness\, response\, and recovery. I have worked on 33 national disasters. What I do locally is a bit different. I am the Volunteer Lead for the Greater Long American Beach Red Cross. Most of my time is spent working in Los Angeles to better prepare its communities in emergency preparedness. I also teach classes \, train newer volunteers\, and help families locally who have been displaced because of an emergency. Mostly house and apartment fires.  I’ve seen enough devastation to know that disasters effect everyone. Depending on how prepared we are will make all the difference in recovery from a disaster. I’m here to help and hopefully motivate you to start now.
